THIRST – A Little Peek at Full Blood

Thirst is a poem from my forthcoming book Full Blood which will be published by Salt in April 2011. Thirst was originally commissioned by Alchemy to explore the question – ‘What is worse than the loss of freedom?’
This beautiful film of the poem was made by Charlotte Taylor and Stephanie Smith and is currently on exhibition in Cartwright Hall in Bradford.
Full Blood is my bravest book so far. I think one has to write in secret, as if no one were ever going to see the work, so that you can explore the ideas you really need to and not get caught in self-censorship. So few people seem to read poetry which actually makes it the most brilliant arena to do this. Though paradoxically, of course, you wish more people read poetry so you can share the soul work you’ve made your life’s work. Still the point is to commit to writing as well as one can, because it does matter, even if no one else believes it. That was my goal at least with this book – after twenty years of working and studying very hard to have some surety and certainty in the way the voice works in the writing, and to then write hard and clear as if no one would ever see the work so I could write what was actually needed from me.. and then to have the guts to put it out there.. Thank God for Salt Publishing is all I can say.
I can’t thank Charlotte and Stephanie enough for this lovely film, they have also filmed another piece of mine called Allegories of Power which at this point is an unpublished two-part poem, but you can find the film on vimeo and a few blogs about the place, and it too is exhibited at Cartwright Hall both as a film and as an installed piece.
